The Joy Of Being A Grandparent

I get it. I finally get it.

More than five and half years ago my daughter Shannon married a great guy, Josh. Right after they were married my friends would always ask me if I was ready to be a grandparent. I would loudly say "No!"

Boy, have I changed my mind. For the past 10 days, Shannon, Josh and 9 month old Declan (pronounced Deck-lyn. It's Irish) spent their vacation with us. Linda and I even had the little guy for 4 days to ourselves. All I can say is it was pure joys for us.

Friends who were already grandparents would tell me what a great experience it was, but I kept thinking it would make me feel old. I was really wrong. It actually makes you feel younger! There is nothing like a grandchild looking up at you and just smiling. It makes your heart melt.

I can't wait to have more grandkids.

  1. Glad it's been such a happy experience! No kids at all here, just pets. . .

  2. Hi Bill. I understand the love and wonderment you are feeling. I'm Kimberly's mom.
My grand-baby, Isabella, is such a blessing. She is our miracle baby.
I'd forgotten just how heartwarming and emotional it is to cuddle a baby and bond with them. The mere touch of one's hand and little fingers and the soft skin of their face against your own, is heavenly. Their smiles, giggles, squeals of excitement at the tiniest things that we all take for granted, are contagious. Grand-babies fill your home with such happiness and extra love that you find yourself uplifted, carefree and smiling and singing all the time.
And, you will be amazed as each stage of their innocent life unfolds and they grow closer and closer to you.

We are happy for you and your wife that you are experiencing those unbelievable joys. You are so very very blessed. Lucky lucky...YOU!

  3. Almost forgot... actually, grand-babies make you feel younger. You start to remember those fun times gone by and you appreciate the simple things around you. Smiling makes your face "happier", brighter, more alert and therefore, younger. Don't you think? HEY! Just go look in the mirror. I'll bet that loving baby took at least 5 yrs away already!
